On Heroes.

We all have people who shape our lives. Most people cite their parents, family, teachers, friends…you get the gist. It’s often times people close to us. Although these are the people who likely influence our lives the most, we still have people, whom we have probably never met, who play a big part in shaping our aspirations. I would like to share mine. This list might not be full of names you have heard of, but I promise they mean a lot to me and have played a significant role in shaping my life.

Tesla3.jpg

Nikola Tesla

This is the guy. Whenever anyone asks who my hero is he always comes up. He was such an amazing human being. He pioneered the transmission of AC current which is used in all homes with electricity. Some of his theories and designs are JUST NOW being put to use. I mean he had the wireless transmission of power figured out way back in the early 1900’s. I mean listen to this story. During the time of the AC vs. DC wars, Tesla and his AC method got the bid to light the World’s Fair in Chicago. The problem is Edison (a huge proponent of DC) owned the patent for lightbulb manufacturing. What did Tesla do? GIve up? Hell no, he came up with a new method of making lightbulbs that not only was in no violation of Edison’s patents, but was actually more efficient to make. What a guy!

He was the pioneer of all modern electrical engineering and the reason I decided to get into engineering. He should be taught extensively in every history book. He is a constant inspiration and there is not enough words to thank him for his contributions to engineering and science as well as my life. Please, I implore you, if you get the chance read up on him. Here is a link to his wiki.

Steve_Wozniak.jpg

Steve Wozniak

The “Woz” as he is known, is a legend, more than a legend, this might be the most influential person in the creation of modern computers. An electrical engineer by trade and education. He has a natural talent for electronics. I have read stories of his incredible understanding and ability to optimize things other people just can’t fathom. He is probably best known for co-founding Apple computers, but what is underlying in that is the computer itself. The Apple II. This introduced the personal computer. The way we interact with a computer today with a display and input device was his brainchild. He introduced the idea of normal people wanting to use computers in their daily lives. He is and forever will be my hero.  Fun loving and genius. This guy deserves more praise than he is already given. Without him I would not be anywhere I am today. Thanks Woz!

gunpei.jpg

Gunpei Yokoi

You have all heard of Nintendo, but I am sure you have not heard of this gentleman. You should know him though. He was one of the reasons Nintendo is as big of a success as it is today. He is the mind behind the Game Boy. The story goes that he was watching a businessman play with his LCD calculator and got inspired. Thus the Game Boy was born. A system which used outdates (even for the time) part to accomplish a task inexpensivly. That’s why I love the guy and Nintendo as a company. The mentality is that you don’t need the best of the best to compete. You need to approach the problem from a lateral perspective.

In comes the Virtual Boy though. I don’t even know if all of you remember the Virtual Boy, but it came out in 1995. In the 90’s virtual reality seemed like the next logical step in video games. I mean you would be IN the game. Nintendo tried to capitalize on this in their own way. Enter Virtual Boy. It was an affordable home console with the heart of VR. It took the same approach as the Game Boy and took older technology to create a new experience at an affordable cost. Sadly, the Virtual Boy was a failure and Gunpei took most of the heat. He left the company in 1996, but still did consulting work for them. The worst part is in 1997 while changing a flat tire a car ran into him killing him. It was a tragic accident and he will forever be missed.

The Game Boy will forever be his legacy and it is an amazing one at that. His use of seemingly deprecated technology to create fun and useful devices is why this guy is one of the good ones.

Shigeru Miyamoto

What can you say about Mr. Miyamoto that hasn’t already been said? He is the heart and soul of Nintendo. He brought us Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Star Fox. He is a fountain of creativity. He is constantly bringing new an great ideas to video game design and furthering the medium with everything he graces. The fact that he pioneered not only modern platforming with the Super Mario Bros. series, but also made the first really cohesive 3D platformer with Mario 64 would be reason enough to love him, but how he can take something like a childhood backyard and turn it into a masterpiece like Pikmin is profound. He is already a legend, and has so many more stories and ideas to give us.

100kutagari.jpg

Ken Kutaragi

The father of the PlayStation. He vaulted Sony into the video game industry with his incredibly successful console the PlayStation. He is an electrical engineer by education which is already enough to love the guy, but to transform a situation such as Nintendo bailing on you for the CD-I (what were they thinking!) and turn it into one of the best selling consoles in history really says something. He also designed the PlaySation 2 from the ground up. 10 years later and the PS2 is still around. That is a testament to your genius. He also created the PSP and PS3. Wow, Ken you are the man!

These are just some of my heroes. The ones that stick out. There is many more, but I would just like to say thanks to all of them. Without them I wouldn’t be able to do what I do today. They are and were amazing people and I highly suggest you read up on them. I would love to hear some of your heroes. Please leave a comment, tweet, or post a Facebook reply. I am really interested.

On The Golden Rule or Modern Christianity in America

This is a long time coming. Almost a lifetime of listening, reasoning, and evaluating has culminated in this outpouring of discontent and confusion. I am not writing this to ruffle feathers or insight rage; I am writing this to try to get people to think about things, start questioning the status quo, and because I just want to articulate my thoughts on the subject in a real way. I realize this is a heavy-handed subject, and I don’t have the hubris to think this is the end-all-be-all of this topic; think of this as the fast-food version of the gourmet meal that is the studies of Theology and Ethics.

I will preface the article by saying I was raised (grammatically I think it’s actually reared, but that just sounds the worst) Catholic. I went to a Catholic school for nine years of my life and am well acquainted with the teachings of Jesus and the New Testament. While we covered much of the New Testament in religion class as well as during the numerous visits to mass one platitude was stressed above all others, Jesus’ Golden Rule. In Matthew 7:12 Jesus is quoted saying “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” Which is an Old-English (the Queen’s English!) way of saying Hey, bro, don’t do junk to people you wouldn’t want done to you. Which is think is the best possible rule I think anyone, religious or not, can live by. This rule had its roots in humanity far before Christianity and will probably long after (if we make it that long, yeesh, you see all this fighting?). This is the reason I don’t dismiss religions because I feel they can serve a very good purpose. If people would live by this maxim I can guarantee within a percent error of +/- 0.00001 the world would be a better place. Yes, that will happen, Unicorns and Bigfoots will procreate, Republicans and Democrats will agree on something, and I am, in reality, Batman. It’s a lofty goal that is realistically unachievable, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work towards it. What I am getting at is even in a large Christian environment The Golden Rule reigned supreme. Jesus lived his life by that and we should aspire to live like Jesus. At least, that is the impression I got. Keeping this in mind we move to level 2.

There is some decisive and hot-button issues out there. One that really get’s my blood boiling is gay rights. To be honest, I don’t even understand the arguments against it from a logical standpoint. Since the scope of this article is based on the religious side I will try to keep my arguments within the realm of Christianity. Every anti-gay activist likes to point to one statement in the Old Testament to support their claims that God is totes a homophobe. Leviticus 18:22 says "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." This is brought up EVERY time religious justification is needed for some egregious action or sentiment. Which, to be honest, if your beliefs are laid out in a neat two-volume set, namely, the New and Old Testament, and it contains such a phrase, then homosexuality would technically be against your religion and would bear consideration. Here is my problem, those books are filled with ALL KINDS of craziness. For example, there are several passages that outline rules for slavery such as in Leviticus 19:20-22: "And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free. And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, even a ram for a trespass offering. And the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering before the LORD for his sin which he hath done: and the sin which he hath done shall be forgiven him." In a more modern colloquial dialect,  if you knock boots with a slave, she gets whipped and you have to sacrifice a ram, then you and God are square. (There is a more detailed outlining of slavery found in the Old Testament on this site) There is also several human sacrifice sentiments found in the Bible (those can be found here). My point is not to berate you with anti-Bible predilections, but to show that not every word of the Bible should be taken as sacred and how we should live our lives. This also dovetails nicely into my main point, and that is that if your basis for hating gays or whoever is based on one sentence you picked out of the Old Testament, then be prepared to enforce all the other nonsense that goes along with it. If God’s word is the Bible and God’s word is irrefutable then everything within its pages should be enforced, not just what you feel like quoting. I argue that the Bible was written by man, as as such is imperfect and should be reinterpreted as time goes forward.

Jesus preached The Golden Rule, and in this “Christian Nation” (as so many believe it is) with so many Christians the goal should be to treat everyone as you, yourself, would like to be treated. If you honestly believe that God would rather you hurt your fellow neighbor rather than embrace him, you might need to review your religious beliefs.

In the spirit of full disclosure I not Christian, I actually am Agnostic, but lean more to the Atheistic view. (Nothing makes you question your beliefs like the Catholic Church) Even with my penchant towards Atheism I still think The Golden Rule is how we should live. It’s unrealistic and is not all encompassing and I realize that, but even making strides in that direction, I believe, leads to a better society.  I have so much more to say on this topic, but I feel if I write anymore it will be too daunting to read. Please, if you have any opinion on this, positive or negative, I would love to hear about it. Just post the comment below. The point was to open up the debate so anything you think on the topic would be greatly appreciated.

On Running.

This topic has probably already turned of the vast majority of readers. I promise this is not about technique or best routes. No, this is more based in philosophy and why I personally run.

A little background. I am training for the Chicago marathon in October. Why? To prove to myself I can do it. I am also reading Haruki Murakami’s auto-biographical book about running. I figured that with a potent cocktail such as that it is about time I wrote about running.

Now, I have never had what you could call an athletic physique. In fact, I am probably the opposite. That is not to say I’m some lazy ass, it’s genes mostly these days (but not always). I am one of those people who will gain weight if I sit still. It sucks, but on the bright side it keeps me aware and active. In high school I was a little chubster. I had a terrible diet and was a total couch potato. Around senior year I got kind of embarrassed and (begrudgingly) decided to do something about it. My girlfriend at the time was all into running; track, cross-country, the whole shebang. (Me being what I was, I must have had just an amazing personality to bag a runner. I kid, I kid…) Anyway she was trying to get to go running so I caved. I actually enjoyed it, I mean beyond the pain, panting, and shin splints. I started to pick it up after that and have been running on and off ever since.

Running is a unique sport. I really think it’s the most human of all sports. You are basically equipped for it naked. You need almost no gear for it, a pair of shoes and a long stretch of road. We are born runners. It’s part of our survival.

Running is also one of the most personal sports. This is why it suits me so well. Aside from races, running is a solitary experience. The only person you are competing against is yourself. This makes only you accountable for any shortfalls that occur. The time when I am running it is very peaceful, almost meditative. I rarely run with music and when I do it’s mostly without lyrics. It’s a chance to escape into my head because the only thing my body needs to worry about is moving forward. If there is ever a problem I need to confront or anger that needs venting I always save it for the run. It’s incredibly cathartic.

There is nothing better than reaching the goal you set for yourself, or finishing a long run. The runner’s high is real and it feels amazing. The endorphins swimming all around invigorating every part of your being. The immediate gratification after running is awesome and keeps you coming back. There is days when you don’t want to run. That never goes away, and from what I read, even at the Olympic level. You just need to push through it.

That’s why I run. It aligns itself so well with my personal philosophies. It’s a matter of you vs. you. That’s what life really is. It is always, how bad do you want it? If you work had enough and have the determination you will get to where ever you want.

Running is a sacred time of day for me. It is my meditation and my soul food. It keeps me healthy, helps me sort through all of life’s crap, and refocuses me. In a nutshell, I need running.

I hope this might inspire some people to take up running even if only to see if they like it. It’s not for everyone nor do I claim that various other activities wont keep you healthy. It’s just my personal favorite. If you do try it and haven’t before or even love running too, leave me a comment, I would love to hear about it!

UPDATE: I didn’t stress it in the above paragraphs, but my girlfriend at the time when I started running deserves a lot of credit. She is the one that pushed me into it and allowed me to discover the joys of running. I am very grateful for that so, thank you.
